COVID

As massage & skincare professionals, hygiene is a big part of our training, licensure & code of ethics. We treat our hands as precious tools. Our nails are short (trimmed every 2-3 days at least) and we never wear rings while we work. We never touch our face or hair during a massage, always using a sleeve or hand towel if a sneeze or itch occurs. We wash our hands with soap and water, sometimes a surgical brush, before and after every client. We keep hand sanitizer in every room in case of contact with client skin issues or fluids. All linens that a client has touched in any way are sanitized in hot water including pillowcases and blankets. We do not come to work when we are sick! This is all normal procedure.

Practitioners are wearing masks throughout practice rooms & common spaces when we deem the situation warrants it. Please check home page for updated info. Please respect your therapist & wear a mask during your treatment if requested.

Appointments

Book online or call 609.884.3177 if you don't see a time that you like. We need a credit card, cash deposit, or Well gift certificate number to hold appointments. We don't charge the card at that time and you can pay however you like after the appointment but we do have a 24-hour cancellation policy (see below).

Please allow at least five minutes before your scheduled appt time to fill out a short intake form, use the restroom, etc. If we are running behind & your appt starts late, we will give you the full time booked. If we are on schedule but you are late for any reason, we will endeavor to give you the full time booked but not at the expense of any client booked after you.

REFLEXOLOGY

True Reflexology is not just foot massage. Reflexology is pinpointed pressure (acupressure) to specifically mapped areas in the foot (hand & ear too) that have a reflex action on other parts of the body (big toe=head/neck, base of toes=sinus, etc.) Reflexology works holistically to enhance self-healing & balance energy flow. It is also used specifically to stimulate certain organs or body functions. Reflexology & its techniques are great for treating stress-related illness or emotional disorder. It's also super useful when trying to treat an area of the body that has been traumatized to the extent that direct touch is not helpful.
Certification in Reflexology by the American Reflexology Certification Board asks for 110-hours of hands-on supervised practice in Foot Reflexology, plus college-level anatomy/physiology study.

(1) Lori Schwartz is experienced, fully certified & available for you @The Well on Monday mornings! Book Reflexology to see Lori

(2) Most of us have been trained in the techniques & theory of Reflexology, & we can easily incorporate this type of foot acupressure it into a full-body massage. Book a Well-Being Massage & attach a note asking for special attention to feet, or just tell your therapist when you come in

PRENATAL

Massage in the first trimester is no longer specifically contraindicated, but some therapists will not work on a first trimester pregnancy so if you're in your first trimester please let us know beforehand. Is 1st trimester safe or not? WebMD actually has the best take on this - see Is Pregnancy Massage Safe?

KIDS GETTING MASSAGE

Under 18 we like to ask for parental consent. Children younger than 14 or 15 are generally not going to benefit from more than a half-hour of massage unless they are athletes or dancers - let's put our heads together to design an appropriate treatment (maybe a half-hour massage plus a psychic reading?)

AROMATHERAPY

Most of our therapists use one of our custom blend of essential oils (go-to is Replenishing Blend, which is Geranium, Rosemary & Patchouli) most often in our Special Blend custom massage oil blend. Some therapists prefer to use massage cream, generally choosing Sacred Earth organic.

Martha loves to do spot treatments like for sinus or headache (Fir & Corn Mint is a current favorite.) Any essential oil or blend is used in very light dilutions of generally 0.01% or about 16 drops per 8oz of oil.

Drew has been making our massage oil since 1996 at the Well and its previous incarnation Oasis in Montauk NY - it's a combination of Grape Seed & Hazelnut oils that we named Superior Glide because that's what it has! Very important for massage! It all started when Drew discovered while working at high-end spas in NYC that Bio***e and other leading makers of commercial massage oil use additives that make their massage oil water-dispersable to help spas save on sheets/laundry. He discovered this when a colleague developed an eczemic reaction to it— on her hands! Why!

INTERNS

Sadly we are unable to continue our long-standing practice of working with Interns. I kept the explanation of our system below just as an inspiration maybe.

“At the Well, we hold massage to a higher standard! It's both our privilege & our responsibility to work with new therapists. Well interns are fully licensed & definitely gifted, ready for prime-time at most day spas or massage envy type places, but needing more hands-on experience to be seeing Well clients at full price!

We audition every applicant and only accept as Interns people who have a "gift" for massage (there is such a thing as "good hands"!), even if they are right out of school. We teach some technique, mostly about how to work with the joint spaces, improve the flow of the routine & connect with the client's body as a whole. We also help Interns develop the confidence to read & assess clients.”
